In Portuguese, the name means “beat”, as in “heartbeat”; in Brazil, it is a type of samba. But L'Artisan Parfumeur's new travel-inspired scent is anything but frantic. In fact, this new twist on cologne is as cool and laid-back as a drink at a beachside bar after a long, lazy day by the ocean...
To conjure the full-on Girl (or Boy) from Ipanema experience Karine Vinchon in Grasse teamed up with Elisabeth Maier in Saõ Paulo. First, a sip of caipirinha, a traditional Brazilian drink prepared with crushed limes, mint leaves and cachaça, a sugar-cane alcohol.
Tiaré and ylang-ylang conjure the scent of tanning lotion on sun-gorged skin, topped off with a splash of coconut water – it is sold from carts along the beaches of Rio –, and rounded out with a trace of an aquatic accord. As it dries down to its base notes, Batucada gives itself over to the hip-swaying Carioca nights with a sensuous musk accord slightly tinged with salt.
Frankly, after flying down to Rio, this is the next best thing: a cool, sexy, playful scent to remind us that summer lies just beyond the Equator.
